The Angel of the Poor embodies the silent and constant presence of the divine among those who live in material, emotional, or spiritual poverty. This is not a triumphant or glorified angel, but a deeply human one, with wide, vulnerable eyes, inhabiting a discarded cardboard box—the same kind of box found in the trash, overlooked and forgotten.
The cardboard box functions as a powerful symbol of limitation, scarcity, and social confinement. It is the space to which many are reduced by poverty. Yet it is also a shelter. The angel is not trapped; it remains. It accompanies. It protects.
From a biblical perspective, the work resonates with passages such as:
“For you will always have the poor with you” (Matthew 26:11) and
“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven” (Matthew 5:3).
The angel represents this unseen blessing—present with the poor even when they are unaware of it—affirming that true wealth is not always material. At the same time, the figure stands as a silent witness to those who generate poverty through indifference or neglect, echoing the Christian mandate to care for the poor, the elderly, and the forgotten.
The German Expressionist language—raw gestures, earthy tones, muted greens, and an exposed surface—amplifies the emotional weight of the piece. The frontal, almost childlike face confronts the viewer without accusation, inviting ethical and spiritual reflection: Where do we stand in the presence of poverty?
This work does not seek pity, but awareness. The Angel of the Poor does not shout or condemn; it remains, accompanies, and sustains, reminding us that even within what society discards, the sacred continues to dwell.
