Curatorial Description:

In King David, ArNoUx translates the ancient spirit of divine struggle into the language of modern expressionism. The face of David is rendered not as a ruler in glory, but as a man in contemplation — both prophet and sinner, warrior and poet. With bold, unrestrained strokes of ochre, green, and gray, ArNoUx explores the tension between light and darkness that defined David’s soul.

The vibrant green and gold tones suggest divine anointment, while the heavy black lines over the eyes and mouth hint at the moral weight of leadership, temptation, and repentance. Like early German Expressionist masters, ArNoUx’s gestures reject realism to reveal interior truth — the trembling moment when faith and humanity collide.

This is not the David of marble or legend, but the David who sang to God in tears, the one who faced himself before facing Goliath.

Biblical Reference:

David was described as “a man after God’s own heart” — humble in origin, chosen by God to rule Israel, yet profoundly human in his failings.
📖 1 Samuel 16:7 — “The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”

This verse mirrors ArNoUx’s approach: the art does not seek beauty, but revelation.

Interpretation:

“King David” stands as a modern psalm in color and gesture — an act of worship painted in movement. It embodies the eternal human rhythm between creation and confession, art and faith.
