Curatorial Statement
In “The Watchers of the Holy City,” a solitary angelic figure emerges from a whirlwind of color, memory, and spiritual presence. Suspended between earth and heaven, the central figure stands before what appears to be an ancient sacred settlement—suggestive of the towns and stone structures of the Holy Land. Around the angel, fragments of architecture, vegetation, and celestial forms dissolve into expressive brushwork, creating a vision that exists beyond ordinary reality.
To the left, a dark tree-like form rises as both nature and symbol, while above it an ethereal white presence may be interpreted as a bird, a messenger, or another angelic being descending from the heavens. On the right, luminous structures glow in blue, gold, and orange, suggesting Jerusalem’s eternal spiritual light. Hidden within the composition are additional human and angelic presences, including a mysterious golden figure who appears almost as a pilgrim passing through the sacred landscape.
Executed with vigorous impasto and expressive mark-making, the painting embodies the emotional intensity of the German Expressionist tradition. Rather than depicting a literal scene, the work conveys an inner revelation: the unseen guardians who accompany humanity through history, faith, and redemption.
The painting speaks of divine protection, sacred memory, and the invisible hosts that surround the faithful. It invites viewers to contemplate the possibility that heaven is never far away—that angels continue to watch over the holy places of the world and the souls who journey through them.
