Curatorial Statement:
The Archangel at the Gate is conceived as a monumental spiritual guardian painted over a reclaimed wooden surface resembling the scale of a garage door — transforming an ordinary architectural entrance into a sacred threshold. Through expressive brushwork, drips, scratches, and translucent layers of color, ArNoUx creates a celestial presence suspended between the earthly and the divine.
The elongated face of the archangel emerges softly from luminous blues, whites, violets, and traces of pink, evoking both fragility and supernatural calm. The work carries the sensation of a protective spirit watching silently over the home and all who cross its entrance.
Inspired by Psalm 91:11, the painting reflects the belief that God assigns angels to guard human beings in their departures and arrivals — protecting paths, homes, journeys, and unseen battles. The use of reclaimed wood reinforces the idea of redemption and spiritual reconstruction: even abandoned materials can become sacred vessels of light and protection.
Within the language of German Expressionism, ArNoUx transforms the surface into an emotional field rather than a realistic image. The drips resemble spiritual energy descending from heaven, while the unfinished textures preserve the raw humanity of faith itself.
This work stands as both a contemporary icon and a spiritual doorway — a reminder that divine protection often exists quietly beside us, even when unseen.
