The Angel of the Three Crosses is a monumental German Expressionist figurative work that presents an angelic presence marked by sorrow, spiritual endurance, and silent contemplation. Rising more than six feet, the figure confronts the viewer at an almost human scale, transforming the encounter with the painting into a direct and deeply emotional experience.
Above the angel’s head, three crosses emerge from a dark, crown-like form. They refer to the Crucifixion at Calvary: Christ at the center and the two crucified men beside Him. Rather than functioning as decorative religious symbols, the crosses become part of the angel’s consciousness—a spiritual crown carrying the memory of sacrifice, suffering, judgment, and redemption.
The angel’s elongated face, asymmetrical features, darkened lips, and wounded gaze reveal the emotional intensity associated with German Expressionism.
