Curatorial Statement
Lost Garden reflects on the spiritual loss of the garden promised by God and the profound consequences of humanity’s separation from divine presence through sin.
At the center of the composition, a female figure confronts the viewer while wearing a cross over her chest. Her presence becomes a symbol of faith, memory, and the possibility of redemption. Behind her, several faces emerge from heavily worked layers of pigment and texture, appearing almost like ancestral witnesses. They evoke generations carrying the memory of what was lost and the continuing human longing for reconciliation with God.
The rough surfaces, distorted features, and emotionally charged palette situate the work within a German Expressionist figurative language. Rather than depicting a literal Eden, ArNoUx constructs a psychological and spiritual landscape in which the lost garden becomes a metaphor for innocence, communion, and humanity’s original closeness to its Creator.
Yet the work is not solely about exile. The cross at the center introduces the possibility of restoration. Lost Garden ultimately speaks about loss, faith, and the enduring hope of returning to the presence of God.
