Curatorial Statement
In Expectation captures a suspended emotional state between uncertainty and revelation. Rendered on a circular metal support, the figure emerges from a vortex of crimson, black, and earth tones, as though materializing from memory, prayer, or prophecy. The circular format eliminates any sense of beginning or end, transforming the portrait into a perpetual cycle of waiting, reflection, and becoming.
The face appears unfinished yet deeply present—a hallmark of German Expressionism, where emotional truth takes precedence over physical accuracy. Heavy brushwork, fractured contours, and layered pigments create a psychological landscape rather than a traditional portrait. The figure’s gaze suggests anticipation: waiting for an answer, a calling, a healing, or a divine intervention.
The intense red field surrounding the figure evokes both spiritual fire and human vulnerability. The metal surface beneath the paint contributes a subtle industrial resonance, contrasting the fragility of the human face with the permanence of the material.
Rather than depicting a specific individual, In Expectation becomes a universal image of humanity standing at the threshold between the known and the unknown, carrying hope through uncertainty.
