In Drifting Vessel of the Self, ArNoUx constructs a psychological seascape where identity, control, and direction fracture into a single, unstable image. The sailboat becomes a metaphor for the human condition: a vessel moving forward, yet internally divided.
The face—functioning as the sail—detaches from the structure it is meant to guide. It is no longer a tool of navigation, but a drifting consciousness, separating from the captain who remains confined within the body of the ship. This rupture introduces a critical tension: control has been lost, not externally, but from within.
In the distance, the city and its lighthouse stand as symbols of order, direction, and possible return. Yet they remain suspended in uncertainty, blurred by emotional turbulence.
Here, the work echoes a biblical truth:
“Take courage! It is I. Don’t be afraid.”
Then Peter stepped out of the boat and walked on the water—but when he took his eyes off Christ, he began to sink. (Matthew 14:29–30)
This painting captures that exact moment—the instant where faith and doubt collide. The drifting sail becomes the loss of focus; the storm, the consequence of looking away.
The gestural force of the painting reinforces this fragmentation. Color moves like currents, dissolving structure into sensation. What remains is a profound question:
Can we move forward… when we lose sight of what guides us?
