Contando nuestros días

Medium: Acrylic and mixed media on assembled plastic bricks
Dimensions: Approximately 16 × 11 inches
Style: German Expressionist Figurative Art
Curatorial Statement
In Counting Our Days, four figures—the man, the woman, the elderly woman, and the seated child—inhabit an irregular structure assembled from two elongated plastic bricks and an additional fragment. Their bodies appear suspended within the same architectural form, as though different generations, memories, and stages of human existence were occupying a single passage through time.
The expressive distortion of the faces, the forceful black contours, and the restrained palette of blue, white, gray, red, and ochre communicate vulnerability rather than conventional beauty. The child seated upon the stone introduces a particularly mysterious presence. His darkness does not necessarily represent evil; instead, it may suggest uncertainty, solitude, spiritual waiting, or the unknown future that every human being must confront.
By painting on industrial plastic—a durable, artificial material—the artist creates a contrast between the apparent permanence of the support and the fragility of human life. Youth, adulthood, old age, memory, and expectation coexist within one fragmented body. The work becomes a meditation on mortality, generational continuity, and the wisdom that comes from recognizing the brevity of our earthly existence.
Biblical Reference
“So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.”
—Psalm 90:12, KJV
The verse gives the work its central meaning: every stage of life belongs to the same sacred measure of time, and every generation is called to live with wisdom before God.
