Curatorial Statement
This work reflects the mystical moment described in the Gospel of Peter, when Christ descends into Sheol to proclaim the Gospel to the dead. Within the composition, at least three spiritual presences emerge: Christ, witnessing souls, and angelic entities that surround the passage between death and redemption.
Rather than illustrating the biblical event literally, ArNoUx approaches the subject through the emotional intensity of German Expressionism. Distorted faces, fragmented gestures, and unstable forms create a psychological landscape suspended between the earthly and the eternal. The figures seem to dissolve and reappear simultaneously, suggesting spirits awakening to divine presence.
The central figure evokes Christ not through perfection, but through spiritual endurance and human sorrow. Around Him, abstracted hands, angelic silhouettes, and fractured faces symbolize those awaiting liberation, judgment, or mercy. The painting moves between darkness and illumination, expressing the tension between despair and salvation.
Through aggressive brushwork and layered textures, the artist transforms theology into emotional experience. The canvas becomes less a narrative image and more a spiritual atmosphere — one in which memory, suffering, death, and redemption coexist.
This work invites viewers to contemplate the mystery of spiritual descent: the idea that divine compassion reaches even the forgotten, the condemned, and the dead.
