Curatorial Statement
For me, the human angel reveals a difficult truth: even when we try to be angels, humans often behave like donkeys—stubborn and senseless.
The Human Angel represents the angel that exists within human nature itself. It is not a celestial or flawless being, but an angel shaped by human limitations: difficulty listening, understanding, seeing clearly, believing, and sustaining faith.
The donkey behind the figure acts as a symbolic reflection of human stubbornness. It is not a representation of evil or the devil, but rather a mirror of ourselves—our resistance to growth, humility, and responsibility. Often, the obstacles we face are not external forces but our own unwillingness to listen, to respect, and to truly see.
Through expressive brushwork, layered textures, and emotionally charged color, the work conveys inner conflict and spiritual tension. The angel’s face carries both vulnerability and endurance, suggesting that awareness is the first step toward transformation.
Within the language of German Expressionism, the painting prioritizes emotional and spiritual truth over formal realism. The distortions of the face, the intensity of the gesture, and the layered color aim to reveal an inner state rather than depict a perfect figure.
The Human Angel invites the viewer to reflect on accountability, compassion, and faith as conscious choices. To evolve, one must first recognize personal blindness and choose understanding over denial.
