Description:
Cupid in the Mirror is a striking reverse glass painting by ArNoUx, blending the raw emotional force of German Expressionism with a contemporary interpretation of mythic symbolism. The figure—suggestive of a modern Cupid—emerges from bold, swirling strokes of green, blue, and white, with piercing eyes and a divided expression that feels both divine and fractured.

The use of Armibio glass (a durable and light-safe material) introduces a reflective quality that encourages the viewer to engage with their own image within the work, as if confronting their personal experience of love, longing, or confusion. The bold abstraction of form and the unexpected layering of colors serve to destabilize traditional beauty and myth, inviting a visceral, psychological response.

The painted letters “E L” float in the space, fragmentary and unresolved—perhaps referencing “EL” (God) or a poetic abbreviation of “LOVE,” adding mystery and spiritual undertone to the piece.

As is characteristic of ArNoUx’s 2025 period, the brushstrokes are visceral and performative, celebrating the intuitive over the rational. The use of the transparent glass surface redefines depth and direction, reversing the usual act of painting and viewing.
