Curatorial Statement
Between Heaven and Earth, and Those Who Dwell There presents a visionary territory in which the spiritual and the earthly coexist without separation. The composition unfolds like an inhabited dream: a city appears in the distance, surrounded by caves, waterways, wells, rocks, and passages that suggest both an ancient landscape and an interior world.
At the center rises a monumental angelic presence, serving as a bridge between heaven and human life. A smaller angel points toward the larger figure, directing the viewer’s attention upward and establishing a spiritual hierarchy within the scene. Nearby, a mother remains beside the angel while protecting her child, introducing tenderness, dependence, and divine guardianship.
Throughout the painting, different human communities occupy the landscape. Working women, dark-skinned figures engaged in labor, and people gathered near the river—some dressed in clothing suggestive of Muslim traditions—form a diverse collective of inhabitants. They do not appear as isolated portraits but as witnesses, workers, travelers, families, and spiritual seekers sharing the same symbolic territory.
The expressive brushwork, compressed bodies, fragmented architecture, and muted blues, grays, greens, and earth tones place the work within a German Expressionist sensibility. Perspective is intentionally unstable: figures, water, buildings, caves, and celestial presences overlap as though memory, faith, and daily existence were occurring simultaneously.
In this work, heaven is not represented as a distant destination. It descends into the city, the river, human labor, motherhood, cultural difference, and the fragile lives of those who inhabit the earth. The painting becomes a meditation on coexistence and divine presence—a world suspended between what is visible and what is eternal.
