Curatorial Statement
Ascending and Descending Angels presents a spiritual vision of celestial beings existing between worlds — angels who descend into human sorrow and rise again carrying memory, prayer, grief, and hope. The composition gathers multiple feminine and androgynous faces suspended in movement, as if appearing through dimensions of light, emotion, and divine observation.
Some figures seem peaceful, others wounded, reflective, or distant. Together they form a choir of spiritual witnesses: angels who watch humanity continuously — observing joy, destruction, innocence, despair, faith, and transformation. They are not portrayed as perfect religious icons, but as emotional presences deeply connected to the human condition.
The vertical energy of the composition reinforces the sensation of ascension and descent. Faces emerge and disappear through expressive layers of color, suggesting movement between heaven and earth. Reds, violets, blues, and luminous whites collide violently against darker passages, creating an atmosphere that is both mystical and psychologically charged.
Executed in the language of German Expressionism, the work prioritizes emotion over anatomical realism. The elongated forms, unstable gazes, and fragmented brushwork transform the canvas into an interior spiritual landscape rather than a literal scene. Each angel becomes a reflection of different emotional states carried by humanity itself: mourning, contemplation, compassion, vigilance, and silent endurance.
Rather than depicting angels as distant beings, ArNoUx presents them as eternal observers walking alongside human existence — rising, descending, listening, and remaining present within the invisible spaces of life.
