Curatorial Statement:
“African Angel of Resistance” emerges as a spiritual and emotional icon painted through raw gesture, instinct, and expressive force. Built upon the symbolic red, yellow, and green palette associated with African identity, Rastafarian spirituality, ancestral endurance, and liberation, the work transforms the figure into a guardian of survival and memory.
The elongated face, crowned in dark gestural marks, carries the weight of suffering, dignity, and transcendence. Heavy black drippings descend across the composition like spiritual wounds, tears, or sacred oil, reinforcing the tension between pain and divine protection. The cross placed at the center of the chest anchors the figure between martyrdom and faith.
Executed on professional Strathmore Bristol paper, the work preserves immediacy and emotional urgency, allowing the physical movement of the artist’s hand to remain visible and unfiltered. The luminous yellow surface acts not merely as background, but as an inner spiritual light radiating through the figure itself.
Through its primitive intensity and contemporary expressionist language, the artwork evokes the presence of an ancestral angel witnessing human struggle while embodying resistance, spirituality, and hope.
