Curatorial Statement:
INRI presents a deeply symbolic and expressive vision of the crucifixion and its eternal meaning. The title references the Latin inscription “Iesus Nazarenus, Rex Iudaeorum” (Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews), the phrase placed above Christ on the cross—here transformed into a declaration not of death, but of victory.
At the center, Christ is depicted crowned—not only with thorns, but with a crown constructed from the very wood of the crucifixion. This wood transcends its physical form, representing humanity itself. We are the material upon which sacrifice was made, the vessel through which redemption flows. His presence is not one of defeat, but of triumph—walking in victory beyond suffering.
Beside Him stands Mary, her face carrying the profound and unrepeatable expression of a mother witnessing the suffering of her son. Her sorrow is silent yet overwhelming, embodying both human grief and sacred strength.
In the background, Roman soldiers grasp the cross, emphasizing the historical weight of the moment. Yet below, the scene transforms: the cross is no longer an instrument of death, but a symbol of glorification. The presence of the Shroud of Turin emerges subtly within the composition, revealing itself as a spiritual imprint—an echo of sacrifice that transcends time and matter.
Through layered textures, gestural strokes, and a restrained yet impactful palette, INRI becomes more than a depiction—it is a theological and emotional architecture. The work invites the viewer to confront the paradox of suffering and redemption, reminding us that what once held death now carries eternal life.
